Life Update: I’m Self-Employed!!
If you follow me on Instagram you may have already heard… but October 30th is officially my last day in corporate America! My first full week of being self-employed begins on November 2nd! Ahhhh! It’s been my dream to take Socially Taylored full-time since I started it back in 2019, but I didn’t think this opportunity would come so soon. Manifestation and the Law of Attraction are a real thing you guys!!
I’ll really miss my team at Media Assembly. I had such an amazing year and a half there and learned so much. I will say that I’m very concerned about not having my work wife Kelly (or coworkers in general) to message every detail about my day to via Slack lol. It’s definitely been hard to say goodbye, but my team was so supportive and it’s made the transition easier.
Why Did I Become Self-Employed?
I’ve been doing freelance social media management on the side of my 9-5 since I graduated college, so I’ve been at this thing for a while. I’ve always approached it with the intention of being my own boss someday. So, I guess you could say that this was always my plan. Plus, I’ve been obsessed with all things social media since my Tumblr blogging days (#throwback).
But I landed 2 new clients this month (and officially had enough clients of my own where I wouldn’t need to have a 9-5) and it was the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m not married, I don’t have any kids or pets, and I’ve built up a savings net… so now is the perfect time to take the risk. I didn’t want to look back and regret not giving myself the chance. My worst case scenario is having to go back to corporate America- which is a rationalized worst case I can live with lol.
I never thought I’d be ready to make the leap knowing I’d have to figure out my own health care, retirement, upgrade a bunch of software, hire an accountant, and save 30% of my income for taxes. But after a lot of self-reflection I realized this was the part of self-employment that has always terrified me. I was never going to be “ready”. It was time to acknowledge that I was scared- and then do it anyways.
And just in case you’re reading this in search of a sign… you can do big and scary things too!!
So… What Will I Be Doing Now?
My services include social media management, paid advertising, consultations and trainings, content planning sessions, and I am in the process of putting the final touches my first coaching program (launching Q1 2021 😉). I have several monthly clients on retainer already, I have clients I see monthly for consultations and content planning sessions, and I’ve been working with a couple other clients on a project-based basis.
What’s Next?
Ah yes… the million dollar question everyone has been asking since I made my big announcement. Honestly, I’m still figuring out how to organize my time best, determine how many hours a week I need for my current clients, and see how much more work I can realistically take on myself. I’m continuing to work with my biz coach (@neat.marketing) for another 5 weeks to get my shit together. I’m teaching a few guest masterclasses in November and have a couple of podcast interviews scheduled as well. I’d like to get back into blogging since I’ve been a D- blogger all of 2020. I also have some digital courses relating to entrepreneurship, social media, and finances that I purchased months ago and have been dying to dive into. All that being said, I think that is a good starting point 😊
I’m feeling allll of the emotions (excited, scared, nervous) for this next chapter of my life. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received from my friends, family, biz coach, and boyfriend. I know self-employment will take some getting used to and that I still have so much to learn, but I am up for the challenge and ready to get started!
